Hair loss is probably one of the inevitable conditions that we face when we get older. Just like high blood pressure, arthritis or any degenerative disease, our hair follicles somewhat fail or no longer can produce strong and healthy hair strands when we come of age.
Unlike the other organs in the body that weaken because of constant use throughout the years, our hair isn’t involved in any activity in our body, it just constantly grows. So why are we suffering from hair loss? And why does hair loss only affect hairs on the head and not body hair?
We suffer from hair loss when we grow older due to a condition called androgenetic alopecia or male/female pattern hair loss. This is the most common type of hair loss and it affects both men and women no matter what the age.
The reason why only the hair on our head sheds away while body hair on our body gets thicker and thicker is due to our hormones. When we reach puberty testosterone levels increase, at the same time testosterone gets converted to a much more potent androgen called DHT or dihydrotestosterone. This the hormone responsible for our thick body hair or also called androgenic hair. Unfortunately, this exact same hormone is responsible for thinning out the hair on our hair, therefore, is responsible for androgenetic alopecia.
How does DHT cause hair loss?
A lot of us think that DHT is the reason for androgenetic alopecia. The truth is, our genes are to blame. People who have a family history of androgenetic alopecia have scalp hair follicles that are sensitive to DHT. So upon puberty, when the hair follicle on the scalp gets exposed to DHT, this hormone slowly weakens the follicles, rendering it from producing thick healthy hair strands.
Treatment.
The only way to stop this type of hair loss is to use a hair loss treatment. There are a lot of treatments available on the market today, but it is always best to use products that are herbal based, since these are safe even after many years of use.
